Cabin Trip Nov 17th 2007

A successful trip on the weekend for this gang.

Phase 1A starts! (actually you have to drop the tree first!)
Barry trims the high spots.

Then slice it into board feet with the big saw. (12' X 8" X 2")

Cabin Trip Sept 29th - 30th, 2007

Another successful weekend at the Cabin that turned into a work weekend.... again!!

By the time I got there with Robin and Colin, (we followed Andrea in Friday nite) Barry and Roz had finished re-planking a section of the Dock (due to unfounded concern over alleged loose boards), finished the walls of the second bedroom and hung a door.

But, luckily, I had brought up the pieces to build a proper gate so we installed it!

The end posts are over 4 feet into the ground!! The cement (4 bags) that Ryan & Katy provided were not used.

We did find time to lug the Yamaha motor back to Robinson Lake and take advantage of the 13ft row boat "abandoned" on shore there.

The 3rd Annual Family & Friends Camping Extravaganza Sept/2007

Another great weekend for the 3 rd Hunter Lake Family & Friends Camping Extravaganza!

Thanks to the volunteers who arrived early to redo the lane way and parking spots. They were starting paving when I left. Who ordered that from Frank Cooper??

As usual the Fishing Derby was very competitive with most Teams returning from last year plus a couple of new teams.... Team Gen X and Team S.S. Minnow took to the water.

Cabin Trip - Aug 4th - 7th

Marcy and I are back from a great weekend at the cabin.
Weather was awesome. Fishing was great! for Perch anyway. Didn't get to Robinson Lake.

Phil caught a 40" Muskie below Cooper Falls in July. Sounds like we should do a canoe trip below Cooper Falls!!!

Tried out the new sail boat and the first time out was like trying to steer a drunken sailor with the winds gusting from at least 3 directions or not at all.

Second time was much better with stronger gusts but at least from almost the same direction. If you can catch enough wind to lift the boat a little you can go from one side to the other in Hunter Lake pretty quick! Takes about 3-4 minutes to go from the west end to the east end (wind out of the north-west) and about 30-40 minutes to tack back to the dock. Take paddles as it can be dead quiet next to shore.
.......................................................................................................
Things got very serious on Monday when police cars, ambulances, fire & rescue vehicles came racing down the road past us to Victoria Falls. The Search & Rescue helicopter arrived later, flying low, up and down the Black River from Phil's to the falls. It turned out to be the worst possible situation. See link for details.

Certainly, a heads up to play safe when at the cabin! We have all been lucky so far.

Barry & Roz's Family Cabin Weekend on July 20-22nd/07

We all had a great time at the cabin. My family was very impressed with all there was to see and do. Thank-you (to all the brothers ) for allowing me to share your play place with my family.
My sister cannot sit on the barge and hold onto a canoe and a drink at the same time. A very funny mishap, but she did save the drink and the kids in the canoe.
Suggest you take bug spray on your next trip!!!
Roz
Nancy & Chris Welcome home at cabin August 18/19 ?, all welcome. Will confiirm. Visiters welcome Aug 25 & 26. Cabin open Aug. 27 to30

Toe Biters - Giant Water Bug !

Here's a pic of the bug that was living under the raft and attacked Barry .
Barry, you were right! They can fly!

Belostomatidae is a family of insects in the Order Hemiptera, colloquially known as giant water bugs or toe-biters. These insects fly to lights in large numbers, earning their other common name, "electric light bugs".
They are typically encountered in freshwater streams and ponds. Individuals prey on aquatic insects, small fish, frogs, tadpoles, small birds, and other organisms they are able to capture. Powerful enzymes are injected into prey to kill them.
They are capable of inflicting a painful bite with their strong beak, and may also pinch with their front legs.

Cabin Friend

Found another cobra at the cabin July 15 2007.
His real name ? An Eastern Hognose. In defence it will hiss and hood like a cobra but if that does not work it will roll over and play dead.
My entry for the photo contest.
We also saw ball lightning and a humming bird /bee ?? photo to follow.

Cabin Trip July 6th-8th

Doug & Marcy, Barry & Roz and Twins enjoyed great weather at the cabin this past weekend.

Highlites
Party raft expanded to hold more ... people (coolers?)
Two ATV trips to the "beach" for swimming.
Cool nites to enjoy a campfire and smores.
Excellent fishing every day.
New shower built, plumbed and powered. (Trial phase)
and
9 mice caught with out really trying!

Sunrise!

Morning fog.

Long walk for cold beer

New radio!

New cabin slogan?

"work weekend" June 22nd - 24th 2007

The "work weekend" extensively outlined by Murray's previous email was marginally attended. But in spite of a shortage of willing hands and the lack of a Quorum, Doug and Barry carried on working dawn to dusk and then some.

Highlites
New bunk added to bedroom, upstairs loft rearranged for efficiency. The cabin now sleeps 17. (only room for 4 coolers though)

The dock is finished!! and as you can tell it's well past the weeds. It is now in the maintenance phase. Warranty expired Sunday night.

There is an "A" bank with a "B" bank in reserve.

The last solar panel has been installed. Now totals 60 watts x 7 hours x 7 days for 3000 watts a week of charging ( at 5 amp/hrs)

The newly renovated Party raft was successfully launched. The Yamaha motor moves it quite nicely. Video's available.

Fox shows up,

Cabin Trip April 27th-29th 2007

First, it was just Murray and I going, then Rob and then Barry , just back from Florida, came up with Jim and Paul.
Rob was a little late Friday nite but finally showed up.... on his bike, having left his van in a mud hole just 5 feet short from dry land (so he said) The rescue party soon winched him out but since there was really another 500 metres of mud decided to leave it where it was.
Jim presented us with a wall plaque with a pic of the 5 owners that is really appreciated and now has an honour spot on the wall.
Another 22 feet of dock was bolted together and installed bring the total to just short of 100 feet. Murray says he can now see deep water from the end! I have another 5 sections of dock in my back yard so we should soon be in deep water.
I get to claim first fish ... 3 nice perch from Hunter Lake.
A couple of cords of wood were split and piled for next year and the water system cleaned and installed. Solar panels doing very well.
Bugs were just starting to show late Sunday so we headed for home.

Cabin Trip - March 30 to April 1st

Doug & Barry arrive at 6pm on Friday via quads as the road was flooded and muddy. Got a call from Justin at 10 pm that he and 3 friends were at LL and looking for a ride in. Several trips back and forth and everyone is in with most of their stuff.
Note: They passed a moose with two calves on the road.
The boys party late into the night and spend most of Sat sleeping then party again.
On Sunday the boys leave early as they ate all their food sometime Sat night. Doug & Barry hang the eaves trough back up, attach the water system (since it was raining) and cut and pile a cord of birch and maple for next year.
PS: In our spare time we blazed a new trail east and north to Lookout Rock.
PPS: Fishing was poor as the lake is still iced in!!

Latest rumor is (from Gail) that the new park is considering banning ATV traffic.

Anybody got any insight into this??

Cabin Trip March 16th-18th

Well everyone arrived as scheduled. Doug, Murray and Justin by Quad. Shawn and Curtis by Honda and Rob by snowmobile on Sat.
Highlight had to be the 16 km ski trip led by Murray on Sat to the power line, Black River and back. Wore the boys out, so Sat night was quiet.
Another first witnessed when Shawn and Curtis laced up the skates and played a little "one on one" on Hunter Lake.
Doug and Rob bush whacked by sled up the slough to the old Dickinson cabin site.
Every thing was froze up pretty good but the snow was too deep in the bush for the ATV off the trails.
Murray and Justin topped off their weekend by skiing out the power line, just because they could.
Expect deep mud on the road next time up.

Cabin Trip March 4th-6th

Dropped into the Cabin after dropping Robin back in Haliburton. The road is plowed but only one car wide!
For eight km we hoped we didn't meet anyone. Parked at Phil's and he hauled our stuff over to the cabin for us.
Clear, sunny and cold!! - 35 C wind chill on Tuesday. Cabin cosy.

January 20 2007

Great snow conditions for ATVs. We could drive almost anywhere.

Here we are at the old "Dead Man's Cabin"

Still needed the odd tow. First guy across cracked the ice. Second guy usually broke through.

Added blower fan to old woodstove to up the heat output.

-25 C outside

+30C inside :)

Cabin Trip Dec 28th- 30th

The last cabin trip enjoyed great weather with a half inch of white stuff to brighten things up. Even better, everything was froze up so we could drive in without sinking in!!

With 4 inches of ice on the lake, the ATV's were doing laps for hours. Anybody got a pic of that??

PS: Oh yeah ... we put up the new solar panels in our spare time.
