2017 Annual Owners Meeting

The Annual Owners meeting was attended by everyone this year. The CEO job moved to Barry for the next three years and we heard promises of bringing in the best people and "make the cabin great again" and "drain the swamp". It's going to be a long three years!

Shawn moved into the Treasury job ... no money left so he has a tough year ahead and Doug came out of the Senate to take a paying job ... secretary. Murray and Rob will try to hold Senate seats.

Lindsay joined us again this year and was a big help getting next years wood in.

The new sun room got a roof and is almost completed.

The Sun Room Addition 2017

It was determined at the 2016 Owners Meeting that the trailer needed some extra floor space to be more user friendly. It was agreed that an enclosed sunroom would be a welcomed addition to the trailer.

After much planning, footing were poured,

trees were cut and sawed into appropriate beams and posts.

A patio door and 16 feet of windows with screens were sourced from friends and family and hauled up to the cabin.
Plans were thrown out and new plans drawn , then lost........then drawn again.
Finally, construction started at the end of August....with new plans.

Doors and windows have been installed as of the end of Sept.  and a roof is in progress.

Annual Fishing Derby 2017

Great turnout for this years camping weekend and fishing derby. Everyone enjoyed the excellent weather and got in some swimming time, too.

The fishing derby got started Sat night with Chris's team getting their one hour in before heading home. This proved to be a winning formula because nobody could beat their best 3 fish total the next day.

A highlite this year was the Low Country Boil supper on Sat. A first at the Cabin but sure to repeat.

See everyone next year!

Work weekend at the Cabin

Since the wheels literally fell off my snowmobile trailer at the Cabin ,I had to take up a grinder and mig welder to try and fix it where it sat. Nick went with me and Murray and Rob joined us.

Welding off a 2000 watt generator had its challenges. First the pull rope broke but I managed to "borrow" a pull rope off Barry's boat motor. Then I found that I had to turn the welder down to keep from overloading the generator.

After the trailer repair we moved to putting in some footings at the trailer for the sunroom addition.

As usual, there were lots of photo ops on the lake.

Cabin Bookings 2017

New booking rules for 2017... Due to the high demand for Cabin time in the summer a few new guidelines are in effect this year.

1) The cabin and trailer are no longer available together. They are now considered separate accommodations.
This means we expect to be able to allow people to use the cabin and other people to use the trailer, at the same time. We may, also allow tenting elsewhere on the property at the same time.

As usual, all requests to use the trailer or cabin go through Doug. (all owners then decide to grant or decline the request, depending on circumstances )

2) All long weekends are open to whoever wants to go. As usual, let Doug know.
All the recreational equipment is to be shared by everyone.
IE. canoes, paddles, life jackets,etc

This will allow more people to use the property in the short summer weeks.
After all, this is a family vacation property and we don't want to have to say "No" to anyone.

There are no rules at the Cabin ... just guidelines... Important Ones!

  1. Play safe …It's a long way to a hospital. Cell phones may not work and 911 may not be able to find you here.
  2. Wear lifejackets when on the water … 3 people have drowned near here in the last 10 years.
  3. Don't wander off by yourself because there are no “Search & Rescue” efforts until first light.
  4. Tend your campfire carefully, especially in dry periods. There is a good chance of a forest fire.
  5. Feeding the bears is not recommended. Nobody has done it twice!
  6.  Leave the wood box full, especially in the winter, the next visitor will thank you or hunt you down…your choice.
  7. Don't leave mousetraps set in the summer when you leave.... It can be a stinky mess by the time someone finds it.
  8. Leave the Cabin as good or better than you found it, thank you!

Donations are welcomed!
So, if you enjoyed your Cabin Time consider a donation to the "Fix the Cabin Fund". We are always working to improve the cabin experience.

The Spring Bugfest Trip May 10th

Doug, Murray, Bruce and Rob gambled that the water had dropped enough to get in and guessed right! Only 2 inches on the road and dropping fast. Pretty good weather but enough black flies to make bug nets a necessity.

First job, fix the dock winter damage..... Done! Plus launch and test the raft,
Second,,, Connect the hydro grid to the trailer .... Done! Trailer has permanent hydro.
Third,,,, reconnect the water system to the cabin ... Done! and it rained for 15 mins just to test it.
Fourth ... Fire up the Hydro Turbine generator to test it... Done!  Ran for 48 hours.
Fifth ..... Catch first fish .... Done!

Busy two days but the cabin is back up and ready for visitors... ... Not that anyone will brave the bugs until almost July.

PS: The Twp grader actually graded almost half the way to our cabin... LOL!!

Spring Trip after the flood April 22nd 2017

The weather turned nice and the flood dried up so we finally got to the cabin this spring.
Barry and Roz were already there and Jerry and I made it by Friday afternoon. Shawn and Jackson arrived Saturday and were joined by friends Chris and son.

Friday night we had a spring clean up fire. More room in the cabin now..LOL!

Shawn brought a new toy with him ....a drone equipped with camera and found the bush to be a challenging environment for flying a drone. Flying over the lake seemed easier until the low battery light came on!

The boys had alot of fun trying things out that you only get to do at the cabin.

Jerry and I wired up the new addition to the solar panels, a 160 watt panel that Shawn delivered.

Some log sawing also got done in between the fun stuff.

Spring Flood Trip.... NOT!

Rozz and I tried to get in last weekend, the snow and ice on the road in was still a foot deep, too deep to straddle with the minivan, a foot of packed ice on one side of the road and mud on the other it was a tough drive.. finally found a place to turn around, got stuck a half dozen times but finally got out before I buried the van completely. We decided to just walk in..

Three quads caught up to us just at the flooded section, we were going to get them to give us a lift over the water, but they zoomed right in, The first quad, started floating then got swept into the river, the other two managed to back out.. the two who went in got back to shore, very cold and very wet.. the quad gone…

Lesson learned the river is not very forgiving.. but I do know where to fish for ATV’s come spring…
Funny thing is a few hours earlier we could have walked right in but would still be trapped there… the water rose so quick.
On the chart 9.4 is flooded over the road it is still at 9,8M..

Cabin - March 17th 2017

A great weekend. Spring seemed to be coming even though we still had 12 in of ice on the lake. Spent Saturday hauling standing dead trees off the slough to dry land with the Yamaha sled and Barry's ATV. The ice was so slick that once you got going it was hard to stop.

Sunday. we ran a hydro cable across the beaver dam from the solar panels to the trailer. Once hooked up this will keep the trailer batteries charged.

Cabin Trip March 5th

Another cabin trip and another moose encounter. Just sitting in the cabin after lunch when I see a female moose walking up to the fire pit beside the cabin. She stopped and looked in the window but because we had a dog, soon cantered down the back trail. Very weird, after years with only one or two encounters we have been up close with moose 3 times this winter.
Murray and Jamie skied in and out! Not easy because an atv had left deep ruts up and down the road during the thaw a week ago and now everything was froze hard as concrete.

Rob got picked up on the Uber Yamaha and arrived Saturday.
Of course, it was bound to happen. Which was faster? The Polaris or Yamaha? They are both very fast on the lake, the Yamaha seemed to have an edge but we ran out of lake before seeing top end.

They hit close to 120km before having to get on the brakes. The lake is a way shorter than we thought. That is scary fast !
The lake still had 8 to 10 inches of ice. We know because we had to chainsaw holes in the ice to plant a couple of new posts for the dock.

Barry and I built the new bookcase on Saturday. Used the trim saw for the finer work...Ha ha.

Great weather! -18 at night.

Febuary Cabin Trip

Doug, Barry and Jerry arrived Friday night (in the dark ..for those that need to know).
The only complication getting in was finding moose on the trail who wouldn't get off! First trip in with Jerry we followed a bull calf for 2 km because he wouldn't get off the trail. All the way from the sand flats to the Robinson Lake cutoff.
Then on the return trip to pick up Barry, I  ran into the Mother Moose! and I mean almost RAN into her. It was very dark and I was moving briskly on the snowmobile when there she was. On the trail!  This time the moose wanted by me so we jockeyed a bit before she bolted by me on the sled.

Ryan,Katie,Lyra and Will came in on sleds behind the snowmobile on Saturday for a day of fun.
