Dec 4th - ATV Rescue Trip

Once again it was time to go rescue Barry's ATV from the bush before too much snow arrived. We called Gail and Phil for a road report Friday nite as we drove up. Gail said that  they had had a lot of rain and there was some water across the Black River road at the culvert. She said " you can make it, just gun it!"
This led to some discussion because we knew Gail drove a 4x4 truck , a little higher off the ground than a minivan!
The road looked good as we drove in until we reached the low spot at the culvert. There was water on the road and it went as far as we could see ... around the bend. Didn't look too deep. Hard to tell at night. After a beer it seemed doable.
Barry went for it. I said "gun it ... and keep it in the middle". It's not very wide at the culvert and quite deep on both sides. I rolled my window down and undid my seat belt

Well it probably wouldn't have been too deep if the flowing water hadn't eroded a ditch across the road. So the hood dipped down a little more than we anticipated and we did get a wave across the windshield but climbed right out of it. It kept running and we made or way through the water and around the bend to dry land. Definitely a two beer crossing!

Don't remember a think about the rest of the weekend.

Annual meeting Nov 06 2010

We wrapped up another year at our Annual Meeting and revised the 5 year plan, once again!

Murray's famous margaritas were very much appreciated for our Mexican theme supper. Not sure why salt and lemons were needed for the single malt scotch, though.

Time out for mouse hunting. It's no limit / indoor hunting for mice at the Cabin !

Cabin hydro is one step closer!

Rob and I decided (after a couple of cold ones) that it wouldn't be that hard to lay the penstock under the road. So off to work we went. (it was 18C and the black flies were out!)

With a little picking

and a little shoveling ...

and more shoveling .

we hit bedrock .... and quit.  So we laid some pipe..... .

and back filled.

then moved the pipe and the micro hydro generator to the new location.

Now all we need to do is run some wire to the cabin and we're on the grid!!

Mystery solved!

This wierd mushroom found by Marcy has finally been identified.

Phallus impudicus, commonly known as the common stinkhorn,
It's a Phallus impudicus, commonly known as the common stinkhorn, is a widespread fungus recognizable for its foul odor and its phallic shape when mature. It is a common mushroom in Europe and western North America, where it occurs in habitats rich in wood debris such as forests and mulched gardens. It appears from summer to late autumn. The fruiting structure is tall and white with a slimy, dark olive colored conical head.

And this ball of "eggs" seen under water at the beaver dam is a bryozoan (Ectoprocta) colony. Freshwater bryozoans are tiny colonial animals that can form jelly-like masses, which are often found attached to docks. Bryozoan colonies can be as much as a foot (30 cm) in diameter.
a bryozoan (Ectoprocta) colony

They are tiny colonial aquatic creatures that effectively filter particles from the water. The large gelatinous species is native to North America and often grows on docks and other submerged wood. Bryozoa have only recently been getting major scientific study but some freshwater varieties are thought to be useful indicators of water quality. It will not exist in water that is contaminated.

Fishing Trip - Sept 17th

Barry & I made a trip to the Cabin on the pretext of  fixing a wiring problem (we did) but really wanted to get in some fishing time on Robinson lake. The fishing was exceptional. We caught bass all over the lake!

On a bush walk at the back of the property we came across an unusual turtle.

After consulting our turtle chart we decided that it is a Blanding's turtle! They grow a 5 to 9 inch shell ...  10 inch max. They mature very slowly, not laying any eggs until age 16 to 20, and they can live up to 70+ years or more years. This one was a record size - close to 12 inches!!
They are a "species at risk" in Ontario.
and protected.

PS: We also has a large doe saunter across in front of the Cabin but only managed some fuzzy pics before it spooked.

The 6th Annual Hunter Lake Family & Friends Camping Weekend - Sept/2010

Although wet at times, everyone had a good time at the 6th Annual Hunter Lake Family & Friends Camping Weekend.
Dawn on Hunter Lake

Many friends and family attended. It was great to see Warren and Lynn back and old friends Ron and Sue for the first time. As well as Ryan and Katie with Lyra and Andrea, all the way from the west coast.

Others wandered in search of fauna and flora. (between cloud bursts)

Although the weather was less than perfect, many entered the Annual Hunter Lake Fishing Derby, hoping to snatch the Master Angler Award away from the Bremner girls who have dominated the last 4 years.

Who took all the fish?

Rob took an early lead in the derby but had his hopes dashed when brother Murray entered his picture of a 13 inch perch (supposedly caught that day). Lucky he had a witness. (where is this alleged picture?)

New Years!

Emily spent a little time with the camera and I must say she has a good eye for Photography.

The Shulist Clan

The Shulists were in smaller numbers this year but seem to have decided on go big or go home. Supper was a 20 lb turkey and 10 pound roast BBQ in an outdoor oven, although absolutely awesomer it killed a perfectly good giver-nite

The Big Boys and Big toys took a run to Lewisham ......that little thing in the middle is my 450 Suz.

Most only made it up for a day or two so they didn't get any wood cut and volunteered to come up and help anytime we have a work weekend. (This group cut, dragged, split and piled this years supply)

Canada Day / Weekend

A perfect weekend.

Rob& Val, Doug & Marcy, Barry with Sarah & Kenny

and

Adam, sporting the new "killer" look!

 Hot days

and cool nights!

It was perfect weather to take to the lake and we had the right vechicle to do it in.

Although, getting in to it was a challenge! and we had to get towed back!

Rob even found enough wind to get his sailboat up on edge.

Work Weeekend June 12 2010

Murray had not been to the Cabin since April and he wanted to make the most of it.

WARNING! You will not see any ATVing, Fishing or Boating pics here

First we extended the deck.

So we could put up the screened gazebo

and then we tore out the east end of the loft to put in the new window.

and so Barry and I weren't standing around too much while Murray was ripping out the wall we levelled the dock (again). (no pic....you've all seen that before)

We did find time to field test the new Water Gen.... a potential source for future hydro.

of course if we weren't doing things like this we would just be bored ..... fishing, ATVing or something :)

Chris & Lee travel to the Cabin with Lindsay & Alex

Lee on her first Cabin trip. Lee experienced many, many "firsts" on her trip.

Looks like an ATV floating down the Black River ....

Chris and Lee exploring the Black River.( no wheels?)
Alex checks for a good place to swim.

Chris & Lee take a dip.

I'm guessing, Lee didn't know this guy swims in the Black River, too!
